Promotion to technical sergeant marks the transition into mid-level noncommissioned officer responsibilities, which include increased supervisory duties, technical expertise, and continued professional military education requirements.

Airmen usually serve between 10 to 12 years before becoming eligible for the rank of technical sergeant, the last stop before Airmen enter the ranks of senior noncommissioned officers.
